One Minute Briefs

Here are a few more one minute briefs I have done today, one being for Stockport College, one for Stockport Library and one is a new logo for Reebok. They are pretty appalling but all have an idea. The idea that I did like is the top one which is a poster for the New York talk we will be giving next week.

Book Cover

Hidden Items

Earlier on I was designing something and noticed that when an object on your artboard is sent to the back behind another object it becomes hidden. You can still click on these items which makes them visible until clicked off. Do these items still exist when the page is printed? You cannot see but they were part of the file. I have been trying to think of how to use this idea for good effect in my work and hidden or subliminal messaging within my work.

New Type

Random Design

Design Compositions

I was messing around earlier and randomly came up with these designs which are all from the original design but cropped and zoomed into. It shows you can take elements from one design and change it into something fresh and new whilst taking all the fuss away.

You just can't beat a bit of cheese.

Unnecessary Quote Marks

Came across a website/ blog recently that was completely devoted to images of unnecessary quote marks. I have seen things like this before so it was funny to see how people use them on signage. They are used to emphasise words but it is just the wrong thing to do entirely.

Audi Poster or Ambient Media Idea

Another development of one of my '1 minute briefs' was the Audi idea about fresh design which led me on to thinking about nature. Straight away the idea is starting to go somewhere. I tried to link nature with the circles of the logo and had the idea about creating artificial crop circles to form the logo which would be a good ambient media campaign as well as a good image for a print campaign. Here it is above.

One Minute Brief - Development

I have taken one of my '1 minute briefs' and developed it into a real poster. I decided to go with the Printworks idea as I thought the idea of using CMYK would work really well. I have developed this idea to make it look as if the poster was printed wrongly. The whole design is upon white representing normal paper and only uses the colours CMYK. I have added some information about upcoming events to make it relevant.

One Minute Briefs - Sandwich Corner Logo

The idea was to typographically actually turn a corner to represent the name of the cafe.

One Minute Briefs - Shelter Poster

The idea was to make the image of a person using the arrows that represent the roof. There is then another arrow over the head representing being under Shelter.

One Minute Briefs - Tesco Poster

The idea came from what rhymed with Tesco and I came up with Al Fresco. Not sure how it would work but the idea of dining out links with what you buy from the supermarket and parties etc.

ONe Minute Briefs - Audi Poster

The Audi was to use the rings of the logo in green to promote the efficiency and fresh design.

One Minute Briefs - McDonalds Poster

This idea was to typographically show the feeling of great taste that McDonalds provides.

One Minute Briefs - Exercised Eating Logo

The idea here was to turn the letter 'X' in Exercise into a person doing a starjump to emphasise a fun feeling with exercise.

One Minute Briefs - Trebor Gum Poster

There wasnt much of an idea apart from it was the first thing that came into my head so I wrote it on the poster. It is funny because of how stupid it is and catches attention.

One Minute Briefs - Virgin Mobile Poster

The idea I had was to try and get people to switch from their existing mobile and try Virgin Mobile for the first time.

One Minute Briefs - New Nike Logo

The idea for this logo was to turn the K into a dynamic looking person such as a kickboxer to represent the sporty nature of the brand.

One minute Briefs - Adidas Poster

I noticed that their could be 3 stripes that come from the word Adidas to create a nice typographic solution for a poster.

One Minute Briefs

A few weeks ago I decided that we needed a break from what we were doing in our current project as we were having a bit of a mental block. To do this I had the idea of a '1 Minute Brief'. We stopped everything we were doing and opened up an a4 blank canvas in illustrator and I asked someone else in the group to come up with a brief for us quickly and time us for 1 minute.
Once we were told the brief we had to start designing. As you can imagine, to come up with a concept through to final design all within one minute is extremely challenging and the results are often really funny and look silly. Sometimes the ideas you have are clever and prove that the first ideas you come up with can be good and pushed further. If you give yourself a one minute brief at the start of a real brief you may find that you come up with a really funny idea that could work. To develop your idea you could potentially use 1 minute briefs throughout and see how the design and idea changes.

When doing these one minute briefs we have also ran it as a competition between 2 designers to see who can come up with the best idea/design. This competitiveness gives the game an added edge and it is funny to see other people's '1 minute' work. We found that all of the other students gathered round to see what we were upto and everyone thought it was a good idea. Vicky even started to play the Countdown music after 30 seconds to add more pressure onto us. Overall I would recommend taking part as it is a real laugh and could potentially help you become a better designer. There is one example of a '1 minute brief' I did, above of a poster for The Printworks in Manchester. The concept is of the CMYK colours involved in print which are the stripes which can also represent the glow paint colours and black which represents the nightlife.

Harry Hill's TV Burp

My favourite TV show is Harry Hill's TV Burp and has been for a long time. It is the only thing apart from football that I bother taking the time out to watch properly. Harry Hill is hilarious and he has also rescued You've Been Framed by making it funny again with his commentary over the same old videos. The way he notices funny things in all the existing everyday TV shows is very clever and inspires me to always be looking for funny things that could be used in my advertising or design.
