YCN Competition Berghaus Idea 1

This is a Berghaus brief set by YCN. The concept behind it is that the positive comes out of the negative word. This then literally comes away from the billboard. It is placed so it looks like it is exploring a certain place in the distance. This is intended to look like it is on the mountain in huge letters much in the same way the 'Hollywood' sign is done. However, the positive word is attached to the billboard creating an illusion of it being distant but being the same exact size as the remaining text on the billboard. The Optistud footprints are the optimum viewpoint with which you can view the billboards. The first 2 visuals are shot from this viewpoint. The 3rd visual is taken from an alternative angle.

YCN Competition Berghaus Idea 2

Myself and James Clancy submitted 2 Berghaus ideas for the YCN competition. This idea focuses on the fact that slippery surfaces are no problem to anyone wearing Optistud. Therefore anyone wearing these boots can ignore the sign.

1000 words Idea Generation

These are a few more ideas for our photography exhibition promotion which use a 1ooo word description of photography which is then turned into something abstract.

YCN Competition Storyboards

As I have had hardly any time spare due to university work, the photography pitch work and my other competition work for the Berghaus brief, I have not been able to fully mock my idea of table tennis being 'uncontrollably addictive' for the brief set by Anomaly. Despite this I really didn't want to waste this idea because I believe it would be really funny and gain a lot of exposure as a T.V. advert. For this reason I am submitting the idea in a storyboard format. The idea is the advert becomes a joke warning against playing table tennis as it could potentially cause a big mess or trouble because your arms uncontrollably try to play the game by themselves at random times whenever you pick something up that remotely resembles a table tennis bat.

Rick Poynor Lecture

A few days ago I attended a lecture by Rick Poynor at Sheffield Hallam University. Poynor is a writer who has a real interest in design monographs. He reviews monographs in magazines etc but also produces and writes monographs. He founded Eye Magazine and the Observer Forum and was in the Helvetica Film. He spoke at length about design monographs and how they are for the 'star' of the design world. They are not very good to critically analyse as there is no right and wrong with them and they can be very opinion based pieces.
The art monograph is the set pattern for monographs and mostly have very simple layouts which integrate text and image well but are often seen as boring.
The monograph can be seen as self interpretation. In the work of Jonathan Barnbrook the work is shown as a whole new construction as it is layered on top of other work aswell as the content and it becomes new work in itself. Layers of 4-5 bits of work are sometimes on each page.

In the case of my favourite designer Stefan Sagmeister, he turns the monograph into a joke and even says at the start of his book 'not another design monograph'. He doesnt take himself so seriously and annotates his own work which is interesting.

The monograph can be for self documentation in the way Neville Brody uses it. His look is old fashioned now because of all the white space but it documented all of his work really well.

Poynor also spoke about the future of the monograph which isn't obvious because of the rise in web based information. The internet is so easily accessed it means that monographs are getting less sales. Now publishers tend to bear the cost so they have to be very cautious when it comes to producing monographs.

Photography Exhibition Ideas Generation

Today we had a meeting with the photography representatives and showed them our ideas for the 1000 words concept. The bottom 3 are what we have decided to push further.

BJL Visit

On the 18th March I visited BJL, an ad agency in Manchester, with my portfolio. I met with their main Art Director and spoke at length about my course, outside work and competition briefs before we eventually got into looking through my portfolio. I received some great advice on art direction and also about thinking of what I want to specialise on when it comes to going for jobs. He suggested that should I want to get a job at an ad agency I should work on some more ad briefs and tailor my portfolio towards that. Other suggestions were to make some of my magazine and identity symbols into screen printed t-shirts and posters which I will hopefully do when I get some spare time.

Luckily they liked my work and I have been invited back to speak with them about a placement but they work in pairs so I need to find someone interested in doing the placement and has good conceptual ideas to come with me.

British Airways Print Adverts

I have been in regular contact with an Art Director recently who has a fantastic portfolio of award winning work. These designs for British Airways are what I personally think are the best due to their excellent ideas which combine with perfect execution.

1000 words

These are a couple of the first ideas for visuals of the 'A Thousand Words' exhibition we are currently working on. The idea for the top one is creating an image from the negative of the words. The idea underneath represents different levels and becomes an abstract image itself.

Mr Bean Whistler's Mother

Just seen this on Bean: The Movie and it was hilarious so I had to look it up after and ended up putting it on here.

Dinosaur Placement

I have recently been contacted back by Dinosaur, a graphic design company in Manchester. I have been offered a placement there starting next week! Unfortunately I am so busy with photography work, competition briefs and university work I am unable to start so soon. We are trying to resolve this so I can still do the placement. The best thing about it is that they are asking me to do the placement rather than the other way around because they like my work which I really appreciate.
